obsession
July 19 I am easily distracted by the details.
Delicious and rare, precious and extraordinary,
the magical minutiae will drive me to distraction.
I love them. Drink them in. Drown in them.
It would be fair to say that I am obsessed by them.
But then Obsession itself has always been rather a compulsion here in the boudoir.
I love an enchantment, a whirlpool, a heady escape from the humdrum.
It is too easy for me to lose myself in a flurry of flirtatious fantasy,
dance a decadent distraction with one delicious detail after another and not come up for air.
While others, stodgy and unkind, accuse me of not looking at the big picture, chasing rainbows or not appreciating the forest for the trees, I see myself rather as
The Mistress of Minutiae,
The Bon Vivant of Beguiling Bits and
The Valiant Voluptuary of Delicious Trivialities.
Passionate and easily charmed, I am compelled to confound myself with a compulsion, overwhelm myself with an obsession, for I fear I simply cannot exist without them.
It is inconceivable to contemplate my days without a detail to drool over, a holy grail to seek, an axe to grind, a mission to undertake, a project to embark on, a vendetta to employ or a passion to get lost in.
Ah, The Obsession. I've known a few, dear reader...
My collection of mermaids, for example. Those seductive and sinuous sirens corralled from all corners of the globe, ferreted out from one Mediterranean village to another, hunted to the exclusion of other treasures, are testament to one of them.
They lounge and linger in various quarters of my lovely home now, smirking at the walls that seem so much closer to one another than they did when we first moved here, the layers of paint at least ten deep, evidence of a peculiar pedantry with fashion colour schemes and more recently acquiring the right shade of white.
Oh, and my teaching days, The Ultimate Exercise in Obsession, remembered for their ludicrous 6am starts and 6pm finishes as I deliberated the details, so many of them; delicious, distracting and so ultimately disabling that they drove me mad.
I have had such a vast number of pedantic pursuits that if my various compulsions,
my delicious distractions were precious stones to be worn, then I should be the Bejewelled Minx, a-glitter and bebaubled with resplendent scintillation.
I should be adorned, decorated and indeed encrusted with the dazzling details
of which I am so fond. For my life is deliriously thick with them.
I am the Pearly Queen of elaborate obsessions.
To my enduring embarrassment, I have a storage unit full of them.
They tell a story, my friends, of the dark and delicious pleasure of delving into something so deeply that one becomes lost,
the losing of oneself in the maelstrom of minutiae so marvelous and magnetic
that wandering the halls of hedonism with such purpose becomes
One's Life Work.
And surely you will agree, dear readers, the pursuit of pleasure is the very occupation of the bon vivant, the sensualist, the voluptuary, the sybaritic minx.
I can assure you dear readers that the occupation is a preoccupation,
as delicious as it is demanding.
And I take my job very seriously.
Indeed, it is A Glorious Obsession.

I have said it so many times I'm sure you've added me to your sycophant list, but I just adore the way you write. The opening para with its delicious alliterations and a devilishly clever combination of words is a heady thrill!
Can't wait for your book.
My darling Magus, most random and magnificent!!
Sycophants no! Sybarites yes!!
Here's to outrageous and delicious use of alliteration and the heady thrill of the first paragraph!
I can't wait for my book either - must stop poring over those devilish details and just get it DONE!!
You shall have a signed copy, darling girl!!

Yes I agree the ravishing Minx has a devilishly delicious way with words and I love it!
I to have a collection of favorite things dear Minx. Cocks and not any Cock will do it has to be Road Island Reds hehehe, I love decorating my kitchen in Roosters :)
Obsession / Passion how very well described as only this MINX of ours can do.
I too am obsessed with collecting statues of fairies. (like your mermaids) they are from all over the world, Places I've been, or places I would love to one day go. I love and cherish them with all of my heart. Some remind me of where I have been, others remind me I still have places to go.
xx
(always beautifully written my dear)
Ah, the Cock indeed, Lady Terri...
A charming accompaniment to any household I must say..
While I have been happy with just the one here in the boudoir, I must confess to adding a further two after visiting Portugal en route to Spain last year.
I am now the proud owner of le coq de Barcelos x2.
I forever regret not staying at the Rising Cock Hotel in Lagos...
I'm sure there were more than a few proud and resplendent coqs in that farmyard!!
I will keep my eye out for a Road Island Red for you, dear Lady!!
Cock a doodle do!!
xx
Mine have tails and yours have wings...
Both are fey and fanciful.
I love legends and the mystery of creatures beautiful, seductive and perhaps a little evil...
Mermaids fit the bill perfectly, as do the faerie folk.
How lovely that you collect them from places you wish to go - now that's magical thinking Meleah!
I love a good obsession!!

I share your obsession with mermaids, Dear Minx, there is one who comments on my blog. You would make the perfect heroine for a treasure-hunting adventure.
Ah, yes, the obsessions..sigh...from a Leo to one who is nearly-so, I completely understand! Mermaids, pin-ups, shiny, silky, sparkly things...I am enamored with them all, and much more. My mantra is of late just that: More, more, more! I imagine you share the same, dear Minx, it is one of the things so absolutely charming about you!
Lovely post, as always!
xoxoxoxo
Rapunzel
Ah, how I long for an adventure, my hairy friend..
another obsession, I'm afraid...
xx
Nothing exceeds like excess, darling Rapunzel!
We can always do with more of the lovely things in life - there is always room for those...
Yet some of these precious things, rare and exclusive, cannot be hunted down like the Holy Grail, for they appear often where we least expect them.
Once found, though, they are held onto with passion.
Dear friends are such a prize, dear Rapunzel.
Like you.

I think I may be obsessed with you, my dear Minx, and your wonderful mastery of the language. Or should that be mistressry?
I am certainly obsessed with your mastery, my dear Lord Likely.
Not only is your language masterful but your manipulation of other organs of intercourse is astounding, if not extraordinary.
I confess to an uncommon interest in your beastliness, dear man xox
Minx,
Since you are pining for an adventure this is an ideal time to create one. Write it down here, so we can all participate in your adventure, too. We can wear blinders and like Lady Godiva, you can lead us to this place that will bring you happiness.
Once there, we can prepare a party for your birthday this Sunday. Fun and revelry. Much drink and dance. Get all the gentlemen to meet us there. We can have fun in the sun.
"Sleeping Kitten - Dancing Dog!"
By the way, congratulations on being top blog of the day at Fuel My Blog. I tried to vote for you but whenever I clicked it brought me straight here. Officially I am voting for you because you so deserve our attention. Bravo!
occupation/preoccupation... i must say minx your mental and semantic acrobatics on this meticulously elaborate post regarding details was fantasticly extraordinary. i too have a fascinating obsession with details, even when a majority of the information serves simply for my idea of control and security. sometimes i simply say "enough!"
Oh what a fabulous idea. I will do the very thing!!
I often wonder how fantastic it would be to meet all my lovely friends from deep within the blogosphere in person!!
I am now formally inviting all of you to my birthday party on Sunday. My Mum is putting on quite the little performance, a ritual she loves to do, with cakes and candles and party hats and the like!!
We can play pin the tail on the donkey, which will most likely be me after a few wines...
I was rather surprised by my refueling I must say!!
Sylvie D is adorable. There is nothing to be gained from clicking on the award here though...it is simply linked to my Flickr account. I am a little silly when it comes to linking and doing...I can live with that.
Theresa, did you know that I awarded you something special last week? I'm not sure if you read that little post. It is called "The Schmoozer" and I know the award will look lovely on your mantlepiece, darling.
xx
I love the little details...like you, I often do my head in with too many of them to digest ...
And I will obsess over them for what seems like ages..
I do not consider myself a perfectionist, however.
I absolutely love the little flaw, the oddity, the thing that is different. It is that rare and precious extraordinary difference that I really appreciate.
Revealing that, on a daily basis, is my obsession.
xx
I am sure this was cause for great celebrations!!!
